Which Great Wall section should you visit? We compare the most popular sections by difficulty, crowds, scenery, and accessibility from Beijing.
Which Great Wall Section Should You Visit?
There are dozens of Great Wall sections near Beijing, but most visitors choose between three: Mutianyu, Badaling, and Jinshanling. Each offers a very different experience. Here's our honest comparison after guiding thousands of visitors to all three.
Mutianyu: Best for Most Visitors
Distance from Beijing: 73 km (1.5-2 hours)
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
Crowds: Moderate
Best for: First-time visitors, families, photographers
Mutianyu is our #1 recommendation for most visitors. It's beautifully restored with 23 watchtowers, surrounded by lush forests, and far less crowded than Badaling. The cable car makes access easy, and there's even a toboggan ride down (a huge hit with kids and adults alike).
Pros: Scenic, manageable crowds, cable car available, toboggan ride, good facilities
Cons: Still touristy (though much less than Badaling), slightly further from Beijing
Badaling: Most Accessible but Most Crowded
Distance from Beijing: 60 km (1-1.5 hours)
Difficulty: Easy
Crowds: Very High
Best for: Limited mobility, quick visits, first-timers who want convenience
Badaling is the most famous and most visited section. It was the first section opened to tourists and has been visited by world leaders. It's the most accessible, with gentle slopes and wide pathways. However, it can be extremely crowded — we're talking shoulder-to-shoulder during peak times.
Pros: Closest to Beijing, fully wheelchair accessible, well-maintained, historic
Cons: Extremely crowded, feels commercial, less authentic atmosphere
Jinshanling: Best for Hikers & Photographers
Distance from Beijing: 130 km (2.5-3 hours)
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Crowds: Low
Best for: Hikers, photographers, adventure seekers
Jinshanling is where the magic happens. This partially restored section offers the most dramatic scenery, the fewest tourists, and the most authentic Great Wall experience. You can walk for hours and barely see another person. The sunrise and sunset views are absolutely spectacular.
Pros: Least crowded, most photogenic, authentic atmosphere, great for hiking
Cons: Furthest from Beijing, steeper sections, fewer facilities, requires good fitness
