Lijiang: The Ultimate City Guide for Foreign Visitors
Lijiang is a city that lives in two worlds. On one hand, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose cobblestone streets, wooden shophouses, and canal-laced old town have survived earthquakes and centuries of history. On the other, it is one of China's most commercialized tourist destinations, where the ancient Naxi minority culture coexists with a thumping bar scene, souvenir shops selling identical scarves, and crowds that can feel overwhelming. Understanding this duality is the key to having a great experience in Lijiang — because beneath the tourist veneer, the old town remains genuinely beautiful, the Naxi culture is fascinating, and the surrounding landscape of snow mountains, gorges, and alpine meadows is breathtaking.
Overview: Why Visit Lijiang
Lijiang Old Town (Dayan) was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 for its organic urban form, its integration of three cultural traditions (Naxi, Han Chinese, and Tibetan), and its remarkable canal water system. The Naxi people, who have inhabited this region for over 1,000 years, developed their own pictographic writing system — Dongba script — which remains in active ceremonial use and is the only living pictographic writing system in the world.
Beyond culture, Lijiang is the gateway to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge (one of the world's deepest river canyons), and the road north to Shangri-La and the Tibetan Plateau. At 2,400 meters (7,900 feet) elevation, the city enjoys a mild climate with nearly 300 days of sunshine per year, earning it the nickname "Oriental Switzerland" among Chinese travelers.
Best Time to Visit
March to May (Spring): Ideal conditions. Temperatures range from 10-22°C (50-72°F) with clear blue skies. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is still snow-capped and photogenic. Azaleas and wild flowers bloom across the mountains. Fewer crowds than summer.
June to August (Summer): Warm (15-28°C) but this is the rainy season. Afternoon and evening showers are frequent. This is peak domestic tourism season, and the old town is at maximum capacity. Tiger Leaping Gorge trails can be slippery. However, the lush green landscape and dramatic cloud formations are beautiful.
September to November (Autumn): Excellent, especially late September through October (avoid Golden Week in the first week of October). Clear skies, golden light, and reduced rainfall. The best season for trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge.
December to February (Winter): Cool days (3-15°C / 37-59°F) with cold nights that can dip below freezing. Crystal-clear skies and stunning mountain views. Very few tourists. Many guesthouses are heated, but old town accommodation can be chilly. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is at its snowiest.
How to Get There
By air: Lijiang Sanyi International Airport (LJG) has direct flights from Kunming (1 hour), Chengdu (1.5 hours), Chongqing (2 hours), Beijing (3.5 hours), Shanghai (3.5 hours), Guangzhou (3 hours), and several other cities. Limited international routes from Bangkok and other Southeast Asian cities operate seasonally. The airport is 28 km south of the old town. Airport buses (CNY 25, 40 minutes) and taxis (CNY 80-100) connect to the old town.
By high-speed rail: Lijiang Station connects to Kunming (approximately 3.5 hours, CNY 200-320) and Dali (approximately 2 hours, CNY 80-130). The Kunming-Lijiang high-speed line makes it easy to include both cities on a Yunnan itinerary. The station is about 10 km south of the old town (CNY 20-30 by taxi).
By bus: Buses connect Lijiang to Dali (3 hours, CNY 60-80), Shangri-La (4 hours, CNY 60-80), Tiger Leaping Gorge town (2 hours, CNY 30-40), and Kunming (8-9 hours, CNY 200). The main bus station is in the new city south of the old town.
Getting Around
On foot: Lijiang Old Town is entirely pedestrian and compact. You can walk from one end to the other in 25 minutes. Walking is the only way to explore the old town — no vehicles are allowed inside.
Taxi and Didi: Available in the new city and for trips to outlying areas. Taxis will drop you at the nearest old town gate. Fares start at CNY 7. For day trips (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge), negotiate a day rate (CNY 300-500) or use organized tours.
Bicycle: Useful for exploring Shuhe Old Town and the surrounding countryside. Rental available throughout the old town (CNY 20-40/day). The flat plateau terrain around Lijiang is good for cycling.
Public bus: City buses connect the old town to the new city, Shuhe Old Town (Bus 6, CNY 1), and the train station. For Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, a tourist shuttle departs from the old town area.
Neighborhoods and Areas Guide
Dayan Old Town (Lijiang Old Town proper)
The main UNESCO-listed old town and where most travelers stay. The central area around Sifang Street (Square Street) is the most commercial and crowded. For a quieter experience, stay in the northern or eastern parts of the old town. The lanes along the Yuhe River (Jade River) are the most atmospheric, especially in the morning before shops open. An "old town maintenance fee" of CNY 50 is technically required but enforcement varies.
Shuhe Old Town
A smaller, quieter old town 4 km north of Dayan. Once a stop on the Tea Horse Road, Shuhe feels more relaxed and less commercialized than Dayan (though development is catching up). Better accommodation value, good restaurants, and the Shuhe Horse Meadow area has mountain views. Easily reachable by Bus 6 or bicycle.
Baisha Village
The oldest settlement in the Lijiang basin, 8 km north of the old town. Baisha retains a genuinely rural atmosphere with traditional Naxi courtyard homes, the famous Baisha Murals (15th-17th century frescoes blending Buddhist, Taoist, and Tibetan imagery), and unobstructed views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Far fewer tourists. Reachable by bicycle (30 minutes) or taxi (CNY 25).
New City (Xianghe District)
The modern city surrounding the old town. Not scenic but has practical amenities — supermarkets, pharmacies, the hospital, and mid-range chain hotels at lower prices than old town guesthouses.
Suggested Itineraries
1-Day Highlights
- Morning: Wake early and walk Dayan Old Town before 9 AM, when the lanes are quiet and the light is golden. Follow the Yuhe River channels past traditional courtyard homes. Visit the Mu Palace (Mufu), the reconstructed palace of the Naxi Mu clan — the ruling family of Lijiang for over 400 years (CNY 40).
- Midday: Climb Lion Hill (Shizi Shan) to the Wangu Tower for panoramic views over the old town rooftops with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background. This is the definitive Lijiang photo opportunity.
- Afternoon: Bicycle to Shuhe Old Town. Explore the quieter lanes and have lunch. Continue to Baisha Village to see the murals and enjoy the mountain views.
- Evening: Return to Dayan for dinner. Walk Sifang Street at night when the red lanterns are lit. If interested, visit a Naxi music concert — the Naxi Ancient Music Association performs traditional Dongba ceremonial music that dates back centuries.
3-Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Follow the 1-Day Highlights above.
- Day 2: Full-day trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Yulong Xueshan). Take the large cable car to the glacier park at 4,506 meters (bring warm clothes — it is frigid even in summer). Visit Blue Moon Valley at the mountain's base, where the glacial meltwater creates surreally blue pools. On the way back, stop at Dongba Valley to learn about Naxi culture and Dongba pictographic script. Combined ticket: approximately CNY 100 for the scenic area + CNY 140 for the large cable car + CNY 20 for the shuttle bus.
- Day 3: Day trip to Tiger Leaping Gorge (Hutiao Xia). The gorge is 100 km north of Lijiang (2 hours by car). For a day trip, visit the Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge viewpoint, which is accessible without serious hiking (CNY 65 entry). For the full two-day trekking experience, see the Day Trips section below. Return to Lijiang in the afternoon.
5-Day Itinerary
- Day 1: Dayan Old Town, Mu Palace, Lion Hill (as Day 1 above).
- Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (as Day 2 above).
- Day 3: Tiger Leaping Gorge two-day trek, Day 1. Bus to Qiaotou, begin the High Trail. Hike 5-6 hours through mountain scenery with views of the gorge and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Stay at a guesthouse along the trail (Half-Way House or Tina's Guesthouse are legendary stops for trekkers).
- Day 4: Tiger Leaping Gorge trek, Day 2. Complete the High Trail with the dramatic descent to the gorge floor at Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge. Ladder climb back up. Bus back to Lijiang. Evening recovery with hot springs or a massage in the old town.
- Day 5: Relaxed day. Morning at Baisha Village, exploring Naxi craft workshops and the murals. Afternoon at Lashi Lake (Lashihai), a wetland about 10 km west of town known for migratory birds (winter) and horseback riding along the old Tea Horse Road (CNY 150-300 depending on the package). Farewell dinner at one of the old town's best restaurants.
Food Guide
Lijiang's cuisine blends Naxi traditions with broader Yunnan flavors. The food is less spicy than Sichuan or Hunan but rich in wild ingredients — mushrooms, herbs, yak meat, and highland grains.
Signature Dishes
- Naxi Grilled Fish (Naxi Kaoyu): Freshwater fish grilled over charcoal with Naxi spice blends. Simple and delicious. CNY 40-60.
- Lijiang Baba: A layered flatbread — either savory (filled with scallions and ham) or sweet (with honey and walnuts). The ultimate Lijiang breakfast. CNY 8-15.
- Yak Hotpot: Yak meat from the Tibetan Plateau region, cooked in a wild mushroom or herbal broth. Hearty mountain food. CNY 80-120 per person.
- Chicken with Wild Mushrooms (Ji Douzi): Free-range chicken slow-cooked with a variety of local wild mushrooms. Yunnan comfort food at its best. CNY 60-100.
- Rushan (Milk Fan): Same as in Dali — grilled cheese sheets with honey. Available as a street snack throughout the old town. CNY 10-15.
Where to Eat
Old Town: Avoid the restaurants directly on Sifang Street, which are overpriced and tourist-oriented. The better food is on the smaller lanes — look for places with local clientele. The area around Wuyi Street and Xinyi Street has good options.
Shuhe: Generally better food quality and lower prices than Dayan. Several excellent Naxi restaurants line the main street.
New City: Huamastreet (Hua Ma Jie) in the new city has a concentration of local restaurants with excellent Yunnan and Naxi food at local prices. Worth the short taxi ride.
Shopping
- Dongba paper: Handmade paper created from the bark of a local shrub, used for Dongba religious texts. Sold as notebooks, prints, and decorative items. A distinctive and lightweight souvenir.
- Naxi handicrafts: Hand-carved wooden items, Dongba script artwork, Naxi embroidery, and copper bells. Quality varies widely — shop around.
- Pu'er tea: As in Dali, Yunnan's famous fermented tea is sold throughout Lijiang. Tea shops will offer tastings. Educated purchases only — ask about origin and age.
- Yak leather goods: Bags, belts, and wallets made from yak leather. Best purchased in Shuhe, which historically was the leather-working center.
- Where to shop: For quality crafts, the lanes off Sifang Street (especially heading east) and Shuhe Old Town. For cheap souvenirs, Sifang Street itself. For tea, the dedicated tea shops on Qiyi Street.
Practical Tips
- Altitude: Lijiang is at 2,400 meters. Most people are fine, but drink extra water, avoid excessive alcohol on the first day, and take it easy. If you plan to ascend Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (up to 4,680 meters), acclimatize in Lijiang for at least one full day first. Portable oxygen cans are sold everywhere (CNY 10-20) and available on the mountain.
- Sun protection: Yunnan's UV is intense at altitude. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses are essential daily items.
- Money: Alipay and WeChat Pay are standard. Cash useful for village visits and small purchases. ATMs available in the old town and new city.
- The bar scene: Lijiang's old town has a notorious bar street along the river. It can be fun but is very loud (live music blasting from every doorway). If you want peace, stay in the northern old town or in Shuhe, away from the bar strip.
- Scams: Be cautious of aggressive tour touts outside the old town gates offering cheap Jade Dragon Snow Mountain or Tiger Leaping Gorge tours. Some cut corners on safety or route you through shopping stops. Book through your guesthouse or a reputable agency.
- Old town fee: A CNY 50 "old town maintenance fee" is technically required but is erratically enforced. Some guesthouses include it; some visitors are never asked. Carry the receipt if you pay it, as it may be checked at certain attractions within the old town.
Day Trips from Lijiang
- Jade Dragon Snow Mountain: 30 km north. Cable cars access three zones — the Glacier Park (4,506m, the highest), Spruce Meadow (3,240m), and Yak Meadow (3,500m). A full-day trip.
- Tiger Leaping Gorge: 100 km north. The High Trail trek is a world-class two-day hike. For a shorter visit, the Upper Gorge viewpoint is accessible as a day trip.
- Lashi Lake (Lashihai): 10 km west. Wetland habitat for migratory birds (best in winter). Horseback riding tours along the Tea Horse Road. Half-day trip.
- Shangri-La (Zhongdian): 4 hours north by bus. The gateway to the Tibetan Plateau with the Songzanlin Monastery and Pudacuo National Park. Ideally an overnight trip.
- Ninglang and Lugu Lake: 4-5 hours northeast. A stunning alpine lake straddling the Yunnan-Sichuan border, home to the matrilineal Mosuo people. Requires 2-3 days for a proper visit.
Common Mistakes First-Timers Make
- Only visiting Dayan Old Town: The main old town is the most commercial part of Lijiang. Shuhe and especially Baisha offer a more authentic, relaxed experience. Include them in your itinerary.
- Not going to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain early: The cable car queues can exceed 2-3 hours by mid-morning. Take the first shuttle (7:00 AM) to beat the crowds. Book tickets the day before through your hotel or online.
- Underestimating Tiger Leaping Gorge: The two-day High Trail trek is moderate by trekking standards but involves significant elevation change (up to 2,670 meters with the 28 Bends section). Bring proper gear, water, and do not attempt it if you are not acclimatized to the altitude.
- Buying overpriced silver: The old town is full of "silver" jewelry shops. Much of the "silver" is actually aluminum or low-grade alloy. If you want real silver, buy from established shops and look for the 999 or 925 stamp.
- Expecting a quiet, undiscovered town: Lijiang receives millions of domestic tourists annually. The old town is lively, crowded, and commercial. Adjust your expectations — the beauty is real, but so are the crowds. Visit in shoulder season and explore early morning for the best experience.
- Not acclimatizing before high-altitude activities: Arriving from sea level and immediately ascending Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is a recipe for altitude sickness. Spend at least one full day in Lijiang (2,400m) before going higher.
